IWD 12th March 2026
International Women’s Day (IWD)
Here is a delightful little song to start your day from the pupils of P4 at Keith Primary school (see the map below if you’re not sure where that is). They are singing about the marine biologist Isabella Gordon who was born in their village in 1903 and became a world expert on crustaceans.
This song is part of the Isabella’s Footsteps project which is currently underway and at a very exciting stage as we come to the penultimate event in Keith on May 18th, Isabella Gordon’s birthday. There’s too much to tell you here, so do please visit this page, you’ll see what I mean!

Isabella Loved the Ocean
CHORUS
Isa-bella, Isabella Gordon
Isabella grew up in Keith
Where everyone was kind to her
Isabella loved the ocean
And she was kind to everyone else
Isa-bella, Isabella Gordon
VERSE 1
When she was little her parents were poor
But they sent her to school every single day
Isa-bella, Isabella Gordon
She wanted to go to university
So to get to Aberdeen she won a bursary
Isa-bella, Isabella Gordon
So she had enough money to study!
CHORUS
VERSE 2
She met the Emperor of Japan
He loved the ocean too
He was kind to Isabella
They talked and talked and talked and talked
Of crabs and lobsters and fish and oceans
They loved the oceans between them
