IWD 11th March 2026
International Women’s Day (IWD)
And now to unveil our next Minerva Scientific project
“The Peaceful Crystallographer”
celebrating the life and work of Dame Kathleen Lonsdale (1903–1971)
In this video we interview scientists, an artist and science historian in the historic Conway Hall Library to find out more about Londsdale and how important she is both to them and indeed to all of us. She was the first female professor at UCL and one of the first female Royal Society Fellows. Defying all odds, her pioneering science led to breakthroughs in organic chemistry and medical treatments like kidney stones. But….that’s not all….. Kathleen was a Quaker, prison reformer, women’s rights activist and pacifist, warning of the dangers of nuclear physics in her book “Is Peace Possible?”.
Over this coming year we will develop the project with the help of the scientists and many others from UCL, schools, community groups, singers, archivists, Quakers and our own EVT singers, researchers and technical crew. We will sing her life with music by women composers, create songs of science in workshops and have a performance for Bloomsbury Festival’s 20th anniversary and UCL’s bicentenary at Conway Hall on October 15th 2026 – and that’s just for starters!
Sign Up for our charmingly infrequent Newsletter to find out more about the project as it develops.
