Kathleen Lonsdale (1903–1971) Image with the kind permission of Stephen Lonsdale provided by The Royal Society
Together we’ll explore voice and breathing techniques you’ll really enjoy and can try at home, while learning songs by women composers. The 2 sessions end with a mini Performance by Frances with some help from any of the willing workshop participants. It will be a singing celebration of Dame Kathleen Lonsdale (1903–1971) – the first female professor at UCL and the first female Fellow of the Royal Society. Defying all odds, her pioneering science led to breakthroughs in organic chemistry and medical treatments. Beyond science, Lonsdale spent a month in Holloway Prison during WW2 as a pacifist and went on to fight for prison reform, women’s rights and world peace, warning of the dangers of nuclear physics and wealth inequality in her book Is Peace Possible?
The music reflects Lonsdale’s eclectic life from her arrival in Essex at the age of 5 as an immigrant from Ireland to her worldwide recognition as an eminent scientist. Ranging through Irish folk song, music-hall, stirring anthems and ethical hymns the performance features works by Cheryl Frances-Hoad, Lonsdale’s contemporaries like Elizabeth Maconchy and Clara Novello Davies (the mother of Ivor Novello) and Conway Hall’s radical thinkers, Eliza Flower and Josephine Troup.
