Lilian Bader (1918 – 2015) was a very successful Aircraft Instrument Engineer in the WAAF (land-based Women’s Auxiliary Air Force), rising to Leading Aircraftwoman and finally Acting Corporal, the first woman to achieve her stripes.

Science Historian Dr Patricia Fara, Emeritus Fellow of Clare College Cambridge, discusses the life and work of Lilian Bader with Warrant Officer Ali Fisher (seen left inspecting an F-35B) an Aeronautical Engineer from the RAF, whose stellar career will inspire anyone to take flight.

Music by Amanda Ira Aldridge (1866 -1956) Composer & Singer
Aldridge studied singing with Jenny Lind, her father was a famous Shakespearean actor, and she taught Paul Robeson (Bader’s favourite singer!). “Azelea” was the original title but we have slightly altered the words to more closely represent the love story of Lilian Bader and her husband. It’s new title is “Dark Eyed Soldier”
